Family history begins with a nine-year-old boy leaving his village for Calcutta, selling tea to pay for school, teaching while he continued to learn, and eventually completing a doctorate.
At Shail Shikhar, retirement became another beginning. The house joined his writing with the students, writers, public figures and performers whose lives touched his own.

The teacher behind a Prime Minister's Hindi
Rajiv Gandhi remained in touch with his former teacher after The Doon School. In 1988, the Prime Minister wrote to thank Dr. Bhatt for his comments on an Independence Day speech and his guidance on correct Hindi.

The writer who kept coming back
Family memory places Ruskin Bond here as a friend, not a formal guest. Dr. Bhatt would not take rent from him, yet Bond kept returning to the house for conversation and companionship.

Himani Shivpuri grew up here among books, students and conversation. The creative inheritance of the house travelled with her into theatre, film and television.
